I think it's great that you are trying to improve your style and you have certainly come to the right place.
Firstly, in the beginning you are going to suck. That is just a fact and it can be very discouraging, especially when you keep on trying and nothing seems to be happening.
Now, I can't say I know the direct way to become awesome, I don't believe that I am awesome myself, but I can say that I have been practicing for a couple of years and tell you what worked for me.
I started by finding people who inspire me. People who I think are awesome and who I want to draw like. For me those people were: David Kawena (http://davidkawena.deviantart.com/) and Chris Sanders (http://alohalilo.deviantart.com/).
I spend allot of time trying to reach this level of skill, mostly by copying their drawings. This did not do much to further my personal style, but it did do allot to further my technique.
Once I started to tire of these, I started to find the joys of the wacom tablet (yes, before this I drew 100% analogue). I started to lean heavily on my tablet and started working hard on my figure drawing. At the time I had a dream of working as an animator for Disney and I realized that I would have to apply to the California Institute of arts (calarts). So I created a daily blog dedicated to this called “get me to calarts” (http://getmetocalarts.wordpress.com/).
If you look at that website you see just how much I improved during the course of one year, just by being vigilant daily.
After I abandoned my plans to become an animator, it's simply to much work, I started to work toward a new goal of becoming a concept artist. This however required me to up my skill level heavily. That is why I started a new blog in my own name (sylvesterhansen.wordpress.com) that I pledged to upload weekly.
What works for me currently, when it comes to drawing, is to keep it simple. I find an adiobook that I like (if you want some free ones, you can find them here: http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/), and listen to it while I draw a 30 minute class from this website.
The good thing about this little ritual is that I get better daily while I remain entertained.
I hope this helped you, even if I got a little bit into my own story for a while.

I tried something different today, I drew a face.

to be honest, this wasn't as much of a challenge I maybe needed, but I figured it was a better idea to draw anything, anything at all, than to get rusty.

Thanks for the video and yes that is basically what I do when I draw , though I don't actually blend all that much, so there was some great advice there.

hi again

due to the success of my last still life I decided to do another one, However, this will probably be the last. This is mostly because I used 4 hours on the one yesterday and I spend 3 hours on this one. So while they are challenging and important to work and practice, I think I will go back to the environments soon.

Sorry for the long absence, but I have had a busy couple of days.

Today Idecided to do something a little diferent. Since I have been doing some ok sketches, I thought it might be about time that I actually spent some time and really delved into one of the issues that I have. that is why I did this still life of a flower in preparation for the nature scenes that I am gpoing to have to do soon.

When trying my luck with drawing environments I have found that it is easiest to draw stuff from sci-fi movies. they deal allot in clean man made lines, which makes the whole thing allot more bearable. I still need to do a bit more nature scenes, but for now it has to wait.

Hi again

So I am my third day of this project, and so far I'm doing OK.

I still find it hard to do nature landscapes, so for now I have gone back to the movie "Moon" to draw. However, this time I figured out that you get a completely straight horizontal or vertical line by holding down shift while drawing, that helped allot.

I think your goals sound very reasonable and I really think you have gotten to the right place. I would recommend taking some of the classes that are on this page.

Ok, so this is my first drawing in my pledge of 100.

I decided that the best way to get a variety of environments to draw was to go through my DVD collection and pause each movie at a random point along the time-line, than draw what is on the screen.

I have been coming here for little over a year and have actually already written a piece of fan mail.

I love the fact that this place is now a forum and I plan to be very active.

To prove this, I will participate in the 100 challenge, so here is my affirmation:

step 1: I would love to be better at drawing environments

step 2:

#1 I will work on basic perspective

#2 I will work on light sources and shadows (including, but not limited to colour practice)

#3 I will work on creating an interesting composition

#4 I will work on infusing my drawings with a particular mood

step 3: I will commit to drawing one drawing per day for 100 days

step 4: I'm not quite sure how to upload a drawing yet, but once I figure it out, I will upload my daily drawing for today
