To practice proportions you need to see the overhaul gesture. The last 2 sketches give me the idea that the head was drawn first and then the rest of the body (or they had more attention after you've drawn the gesture line).
I myself am trying to defocus on details and pay more attention to "what that person/animal/living being is or is doing.
Also, whenever you're practing both the full reference and it's details, always step back a little or position your head a little far away from the drawing and question yourself if the proportions are good.
Lastly, i like this "technique" where in a page or limited space, practice sketching the gestures at random sizes, but be warned: everytime you do a big gesture, you won't have much space for the rest of the other drawing. This helped me to loosen up more my hand and my eyes.
