10min

Done as part of a 30 minute class.

My current goal is: I don't know! I am an absolute beginner; I'm here to study the basics of rendering

I can see that you are starting with good rough lines and a general shape and then going in and adding your details, and that is fantastic. There is a stiffness to your work and I think this is probably because you don't trust yourself.

I have been using this site for about 2 years now and know most of the models if not most of the pictures in the figure drawing pretty well. So I recognize the model and can say that you did well with your basic proportions and your rendering.

My advice is loosen up a little bit and trust yourself.

My question (that you don't have to answer this is more for you to ponder)

When you start your longer drawing, like the 30 minutes. Do you immediately start putting pencil to paper or do you pause a moment and really look at what you are doing?

I find that if I spend a good minute or more simply looking at the figure (live or photo reference) and tracing the shape of the figure and finding that line of action - the rest of my time is better spent.

And I think that is what you are lacking here. You are clearly mapping out the shape of the body, the lines of the arm.

But when you start your 30 minute sketch do you draw a single line that describes the figure?

Slow down, look, draw the line of action. Then go in and do the work.

It really helps.

You did a great job with rendering the finished product with shading. I would suggest focusing on any weak spots that you have like the hands or even continue refining the face before you go into shading and finer details! Focusing on your weak spots are the #1 key to improving faster!

Dang that's an amazing sketch. I love the pose and dynamism. If I had a critique it would be, don't be like me and avoid drawing the fingers. I know drawing hands sucks but you gotta do it. If you can do those amazing details in the torso you can do it on the hands. ^_~
