day 33- hands

by Jordankinsley, October 9th 2020 © 2020 Jordankinsley

Done as part of a 1 hour class.

My current goal is: Better understand human anatomy, so I can render imagined poses

i always forget how semicomplicating these can be.

These have so much character!

One thing you could try doing if you want to draw with more realism is the exercise of drawing a human face upside down, to trick your brain into seeing what is really there, and not what it thinks a face (or hand, or body) looks like. Another exercise to try would be blind contour drawing, which means following all the contours and lines of your reference image without taking your pencil off the paper or looking at your drawing. The end result is rather odd, but it teachers your brain to see what is really there, and get it onto the paper.

Love your work, I think the hand on the left is especially good.

Awesome! Looks great! I'd suggest focusing on drawing the looser forms of hands when you first start a life drawing, rather than going straight into details. Practise doing 30 second, or 1 minute drawings, starting off with lightly sketched circles, ovals, and lines, defining where the thumb connects to the palm, and where each knuckle on a finger is. Looser, longer lines will always be pretty helpful across all forms of life drawing, instead of shorter, faster, sketchier lines. It can be hard to get used to (trust me, I'm struggling), but it'll be worth it.
