30 minute figure session, critique please?

by Meijiisconfused, June 19th 2023 © 2023 Meijiisconfused

Hi,
So I've tried to focus on more gesture like I was told to, but compared to last time I feel like getting less accurate proportions, less clean lines (to the point that I did not dare add more details to the 10 minute pose even though I had the time) and overall my poses are less readable than last time.

I'd like to know if I'm going to the right direction at least compared to last time. (

Well, Meijiisconfused, I think I say that you're making the greatest progress on your lines of action, balance, and rhythm that I've ever seen from you to date! Therefore, I feel like your clarity and smoothness of your poses' lines and shapes could use the most punching up or jazzing up out of you. Would you care to go for 34 more minutes of 30 second scribbliest pose scrawls, all just to completely warm yourself up? But that's not all, also to hold your Apple Pencil or whatever with your whole arm or shoulder to get the longest lines possible.(because there are the least muscles to co-ordinate.)

Here's the two reasons:

1) To make your lines and shapes the least hairiest, itchiest, and scratchiest, so that you can be most always decisive in your choices.

2) To get to be the best with your pose and drawing motions so that you can render imagined poses and gestures.

For most info, please pick up a PDF of the 2 Walt Stanchfield books right here and right here.

And so, my hat's off to you, and thank you for asking for critiques.

I think you are definitely pushing yourself and thats a good thing. Your new stuff has more exaggerated poses despite them being more muddied and thats a good thing. You just need to refine that process while keeping the exaggeration.

I'd reccomend trying out a thicker brush and reducing your lines. Scribbly lines a great for loosening you up, pushing poses, but as you saw, kind of awful for longer pieces. A thicker brush makes scribbly lines unmanagable. You have to take your time with each mark. Learn how to express more energy not by painting more energetically, but by giving the feeling of energy with just a few lines.

You can also try just switching back and forth between the two different appoaches. Scribble style as a warm up, then practice your original approach while trying to keep the exageration.
