"Lost in the Wild White Surface"

by Jcmlfineart, October 24th 2021 © 2021 Jcmlfineart

Done as part of a 3 hour class.

My current goal is: Improve at correctly capturing the overall proportions of the human form

30 min drawing.

I Lost the good proportions in the hand and could not recover them. Consequently, I hyper-focused on this area instead of moving on and working on the whole image bringing it up slowly. I bunged it a lot with frustration and more and more mistakes.

Don't you dislike it when you forget to follow your own advice? I know better, but I could not shake the "I'll fix it bug".

What are a few ways you help yourself get out of ruts like this for long poses?

Thanks for all your aid and suggestions,

Well it’s not bad ,I love the hair and the body. The hands are kinda weird but still dope . Now to the face, the eyes are different, like u can see a big difference between them. I’m no teacher or anything so yes don’t take it seriously 😅

Liadrawsat13,

Yeah, the more I tried to fix it, the worse it got. I know everything about this drawing got wonky after all my supposed fixes. Both my frustration and determination are in evidence, but overall, it was a fail.

I think the hard lesson was relearned again because before I started getting in that funk, I was on my way to something excellent, and I lost it! Wha wah!

It happens to the best of us. What do you do when you get out of that "I'm'a smush it in phase" for longer poses?

Say, now here's a very excellently elegant sketch I've ever seen from you tonight, jcmlfineart! I love how much of the gesture you've got going on your nude figure, in terms of construction, and in terms of the bone and muscle anatomy. Very good and great.

So, in terms of your hand proportion issues, I think you're completely too hyper-fixated on the overall relationships too long. Would you please free up your dominant hand with a 30 minute custom session of 30 second hands and feet drawings?

The reason why you could and should do this is because, with patience, time and practice, the more you improve your edges, gestures and spaces, then your proportions and angles (relationships) of your hands and feet will constantly improve as you can yourself. And if you wanna know more, be sure to check out this link on Morpho Anatomy book.

All the best and happy drawing.

Polyvious,

Well, this is cool. Thanks for the reference to add to my library. I study anatomy every Monday and Wednesday. It's been a bit since I could find a new book to work through. I really appreciate the help.

So, when you get in the funk, you stop what you're doing and change to another drawing session of shorter poses? Did I understand you correctly? If so, that is an interesting concept I have not tried before. Maybe you are right, maybe I just need to jostle my plans when I start to identify the "Fix it Funk".

All the best,

Try to think of the form as 3dimensional and draw it as 3d to understand it . Don't copy the model , try to draw the same model in a different pose if you have to and only refer to the drawing in order to understand the proportions . Because its a different pose it would force you to analyze and understand the volumes of the shapes you are seeing.
