Goldfish

I sketched a simple watercolor pencil drawing and filled in with gouache for a couple layers and did some details in watercolor pencil again. I used a white pen to do a little highlight, bit I think I should have used gouache or watercolor pencil. I did went in with a light blue watercolor pencil and lightly filled in the color for the background and tried to smooth is with a little water. I only use 80 lb sketchbook paper so I didn't want to go overboard with a wash the paper was already buckling.

Good evening, justdesi. Great work on your watercolor pencil drawing of your goldfish. Good job on your mixed-media technique with some gouache.

I can see where you're getting into the bucking paper problem in the end. Would you try it again and this time, with some watercolor or other heaviest paper. You can get them in any brick-and-mortar or online art store? The reason why you could use some of the heaviest paper is because it's sorta different from sketch paper (80 lb.)

Hope this helps and sustains you and your current goal.

Hey!

That looks amazing! I love the vibrancy of the colors.

A technique to deepen shadows I found pretty helpful could be to use the complimentary color on a layer beneath, maybe this could help divide similar colored areas as next to the head. But honestly, that could also be due to the way the photo looks on my screen.

Keep up the awesome work and have a great day!

I really like this! lovely vibrant orange and great attention to detail on the head. The main thing I would want to see is bringing in a darker color into the deepest wrinkles. Not too much--this has a nice sillouhette and it wouldn't do to break it up with harsh lines--but enough to make the details a little clearer around the head where everything's sort of running together in that really bright orange.

Hi there,

I really like the drawing. I think it came out very well. As for any critique I could offer I think the drawing lacks depth. As others have noted, you might want to try darkening your shadows so that one scale doesn't look like its bleeding into another. This should give the effect of every scale being more individually noticeable at a glance
