10 minute female face study

Moon Sun,

I feel you would benefit from a one line class. Do your regular 30-minute class here, but with each pose, do it neatly using one continuous line for each drawing.

Your line quality seems stiff, and if not for using a sketching program, your line pressure and quality of line look like if they were done on paper, they would be near the same with no variety.

I do this sometimes too. You are not alone. Working on programs sometimes can put us in bad habits like pressure and quality of line cause "the computer program will do that for us". It's a trap. Don't skip on paper, even if it's only for exercise. it helps you see gaps in your artistry that programs can hide.

What's the point of One Line drawings?

If you are only focused on the quality of your lines for shading, expression and otherwise. I feel you will learn something and strengthen your skills to display emotion and give your work more depth within that ten-minute period. The lie that shading can hide a multitude of art sins is wrong. (-I've been there, multiple times.) Often it will do the opposite and will display where you get lost in the drawing. the "uh, what do I do now? I have x-amount of time still" and then pushing more pigment feels evident in your drawing, especially around the mouth and eyes. -Was I right?

If you do the challenge, give me a shout. I'd love to see what you come up with in your next tem minute drawing. Plus, your shading will also improve since you are limiting your art style with such small parameters.

But here is the rule, lift the pen, and the draw is done. No cheating no redos!

Good Luck.

All the best,

Thank you for the advice! I will have to try the one-line challenge before I do my next class! I haven't done one since my freshman year of high school, and I remember loving the assignment and the outcome. If it goes well, I'll be sure to post it. I'll also invest some money into a cheap sketchpad so I can start drawing traditionally again. Once again, thank you!

Good afternoon again, Moon Sun.

Greatest job on your range of forces, spaces, and forms of your facial relationships.(proportions and angles) I think your potential is showing the most, but I feel that the mark-making is not too boldest and powerful, but broadest enough yet. Why don't you please loosen up your contours (outlines) and gestures with 12 minutes of 2 minute blind contours and continuous lines of male and female faces and expressions?

As a result, your gestural mark-making will be the least stilted and the most broadest and gutsiest. My hat's off to you.

Moon Sun

Thank you for your critique! I agree with everything you said, and it really allowed me to look closer into other things I have made and realize that they have similar problems as you stated. I will take your advice on the blind contour exercises, I used to do those all the time a couple of years ago and stopped for some reason. Thank you again!
