Practicing face studies with no grid

Focusing on shadows, highlights and angles rather than shapes

Hello, Hanmdp.

Great job on your observation and caricatures of edges, spaces, relationships (proportions), and of course, the tones and gestalts. However, these faces are too rigid to me yet. Would you like to go ahead with 5 minutes of 30 second faces and expressions, please?

The reason why is because, if you want your goal to specifically be "make your faces and expressions less stiff and more fluid," then I suggest you bring it on.

Much luck, and happy hobby sketching.

Really great drawings! So lively.

I like the way your figures show emotion in their eyes and the way the eyes squint or crease into a smile. You did a good job drawing spectacles on the man with the cap. You could add more detail and shading to the cap to make it look more realistic.

Looks great. From your description and your results, I am quite certain, that you already did a lot of faces with a lot of grid. Your shapes seem spot on, even if you don't focus on them.
