It's been a long time since I've done gesture drawing. I feel like I'm confused on which aspect of the study I should focus on, either the line or details. At glance, I feel I've made them stiff and I do not know what to focus on. Any suggestion and critique would be appreciated!
I don't see any guidelines or forms. maybe if you don't know what to focus on it would help to start with the construction volumes and draw your lines overtop of that
If you can, overlay the drawings over the original photos after your session to compare how close you got to the proportions and where you were off.
On one of the 5-minute figure drawings you have made the fingers quite confusing and bigger than the palms. They seemed rushed and more of the attention seems to go into shading on the arms
I think your feeling stiff is a good observation - from what I can tell you are jumping directly into outlining your figures when gesture drawings are more about trying to find the flow of a figure. I tend to look at the figure judging the orientation of the head, ribcage, and pelvis to find the flow of the figure before worrying about details or even scale.
If you are doing a longer pose (10 minutes) I think figuring out your scale should be the first step but finding the flow is nearly just as important.
The other thing that can make your drawing feel more dynamic is by paying attention to where you are drawing from - your drawings appear to be drawn from your wrist which tend to come out very controlled which can seem stiff for larger motions. I would suggest starting your gestures with movements from the shoulder.
If you've never seen any videos from the Proko youtube channel, they are a great channel for learning technique. The link below shows an excellent process for gesture drawing.
I have ADHD and OCD so i go into bouts of perfectionism when i spend too long on a piece. So i need some pointers to put me on track, anyone also have tips on chibi artstyle?
Even though youtube videos are helpful, im also fine with visual assistance and sketches done on my pieces
